I have memories of Carter that are different from yours. I remember the rising gas prices, which a farmer could not afford. I remember the fall of the marine barracks and his lack of response.

He was one of those environmentalists before they were a thing. Everything he signed seemed to doom farmers to poverty instead of making a good living.

Other than that, I have no major complaints about him. He is a decent person and has done his part for Housing for Humanity.

I have the same memories and that is why he was never a favorite of mine. It was only after visiting his boyhood home and Plains, Georgia, reading his memoir of growing up, and actually learning of all he did "after" his presidency that I came to admire him and have the greatest respect. He certainly redeemed himself as he realized that he had been taught much that he found out as he evolved was wrong. It is certainly okay by me to revise oneself. I have done the same. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment on my review.

What many don’t seem to remember when they recall high gas prices and general inflation is that OPEC came into being in Jimmy’s tenure. That sent the price per barrel up 22. Percent overnight. And as for his environmentalism, maybe if Ronnie hadn’t undone every alternative energy program Carter had started (Ray-gun was glad to oblige his pals, the fossil fuel barons) maybe things like Helene would not be so ferocious. See how coastal farmers do when the ocean takes over their crop land . We are surely headed that way!

I read that prescient Jimmy had solar panels installed on the roof of the White House, Rayguns then had them removed, and then Obama installed new ones. Ha.

And let’s remember Ron’s vigorous invasion of international power ….Grenada! Tough guy, all right.

Astonishing how great a soul Jimmy Carter has. I wonder if Ronald Reagan --originator of the neoliberal policies that have decimated the American middle and working classes and sown ignorsanty distrust of government action of ANY kind-- ever did a charitable tyhng in his life?

I am reading Jonathan Alter’s biography of him now. Amazing soul is right. I take it you’re not impressed with the “trickle down theory” either. The more I read of Jimmy the better I like him. Thanks for reading and commenting Sydney.

Thank you for both reading and commenting. It truly is a great book. And the Alter biography is hard to put down as well.
